The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) ensures that children who rely on free or reduced-price meals at school are able to get the nutrition they need when schools are closed.
Through the Summer Food Service Program and the Seamless Summer Options, children receive nutritious meals in the summer. Usually, the rules require that children gather and eat their meals on-site. When a public health emergency requires social distancing, USDA makes temporary changes so that meals may be taken home, and parents or guardians may pick meals for their children if their state allows.
Families can use this Meals for Kids Finder tool to find directions to nearby sites as well as hours of operation and contact information.
The USDA National Hunger Hotline remains a helpful resource for people seeking food assistance. The hotline, operated by Hunger Free America, can be reached Monday through Friday between 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM Eastern Time at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479) or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (1-877-842-6273) for assistance in Spanish.
