Who We Are
The Didlake Community Engagement program offers opportunities for participants to interact directly with people who do not have disabilities in community settings. Community engagement focuses on active participation, not simply being present in the community. While in the community, program participants are supported and encouraged to learn and understand how to successfully engage in each activity with the goal of developing interdependent relationships.
Activities facilitate relationship building through consistent interaction with the same people and settings in the community over a period of time. The goal is to experience an ordinary, yet customized community experience. Staff work with individuals to develop community activities which meet their specific engagement goals.
Activities can include:
- Shopping,
- Dining out,
- Attending a movie, concert, or theater production,
- Participating in community festivals and events,
- Working out at a gym,
- Visiting museums,
- Taking art, music, or other classes,
- Receiving salon services,
- Volunteering.
