Who We Are
The Community Tax Law Project (CTLP) provides free legal assistance to low and moderate-income Virginia taxpayers who have a tax problem with the IRS or the Virginia Department of Taxation. CTLP's services are free to qualifying individuals. CTLP also conducts educational programs on tax issues impacting lower-income taxpayers. CTLP does not prepare current year tax returns.
CTLP staff and volunteers accept all sorts of federal and state tax cases, including collections, audits, appeals, U.S. Tax Court cases, and innocent spouse claims.
CTLP's assists:
- Taxpayers substantiate legitimate claims for tax benefits;
- Custodial parents prove that they are entitled to claim their children on their returns;
- Taxpayers correct erroneous wage and income reports;
- Taxpayers with tax issues related to the Affordable Care Act;
- Taxpayers cope with the tax consequences of home foreclosure and cancellation of debt;
- Financially challenged taxpayers to work out payment alternatives to discharge their tax liability;
- Innocent and injured spouses escape liability for taxes they do not owe;
- Retired and disabled taxpayers retain all of their retirement or disability benefits, so they can pay their rent and purchase food and medicine.
