Who We Are
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is operated by the federal government. Call for information about trails, ponies, hunting, fishing, picnic areas, etc.
The Information Center is located at the refuge in the Visitor Center/Contact Station, and it is open daily from 9AM to 5PM. The following programs are conducted throughout the year.
Wildlife films in auditorium and guided hikes of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes in length. Groups interested in selecting special tours or auditorium programs may contact the refuge through out the year.
Wildlife Loop - A three-and-a-half mile/5.6 km look drive through the waterfowl pond area. Two observation platforms for photography and birdwatchers. Hikers and bikers are welcome, closed to vehicles until 3PM, daily year round.
Woodland Trail - 1.6 mile/ 2.6 km hiking and biking trail - daily year round.
Lighthouse Trail - Quarter mile/.4 km food trail to the Assateague Lighthouse daily year round. The Light House Tower is not open to the public.
Open Beach - 10 miles/16.1 km of natural beach for foot traffic only. The refuge also sponsors a waterfowl week during Thanksgiving week.
