Who We Are
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is a Federal research institute focusing on the conduct and support of research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of severe behavioral health disorders. The Institute is a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), under the Department of Health and Human Services. The Institute's Office of Communications & Publications provides a public inquiries line that is staffed with trained information specialists who respond to information requests from the lay public, clinicians, and the scientific community with a variety of publications.
The mission of the NIMH is to reduce the burden of behavioral disorders through research on mind, brain, and behavior.
- Provides information on NIMH programs, meetings, workshops and symposia. Provides referrals to other Federal agencies with information on behavioral health issues.
- Provides publications on mental health issues including depression, bipolar disorder, learning disabilities, children's mental disorders, schizophrenia, paranoia, ADHD, autism, Alzheimer's disease, panic, obsessive/compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and rural mental health.
