Who We Are
The Opening Door's mission is to open the doors to persons with hearing, visual, mobility, and cognitive disabilities so they can enjoy travel and all that the world has to offer. The non profit organization hosts two web sites, Accessible Virginia, which has replaced the print version of The Virginia Travel Guide for Persons with Disabilities, and Travel Guides, a web portal on access information world wide.
The web site provides comprehensive information such as locations and measurements of doors, aisles, stairways and bathroom facilities, as well as listings of dialysis centers, equipment repair locations and even veterinarians for assistance animals.
Accessible Virginia website was done by people having physical or sensory disabilities for persons with disabilities. The listings on this site accepted the invitation to be part of Accessible Virginia. Data was obtained by on-site visits or accessibility questionnaires. On-site assessments were done by occupational, physical, or recreational therapists with persons with disabilities checking the assessments for accuracy.
