Who We Are

The Richmond National Battlefield Park consists of 13 areas and visitor centers.  The park's resources include a naval battle, a key industrial complex, the Confederacy's largest hospital, and dozens of miles of elaborate original fortifications.  A driving tour of the battlefields outlined on the park map includes 13 separate sites with four visitor centers along an 80-mile route. A full day is required to experience the entire battlefield park.

The park commemorates four major actions of the U.S. Civil War: 1862 Seven Days Campaign, June 26 until July 1, 1862, encompassing Beaver Dam Creek, Gaines’ Mill, Glendale (Frayser’s Farm), and Malvern Hill; a portion of the 1864 Overland Campaign, May 28 until June 13, 1864, including Totopotomoy Creek and Cold Harbor; the May 15, 1862 naval action at Drewry’s Bluff; and actions along the Richmond-Petersburg front, September 29, 1864 until April 2, 1865, encompassing Fort Harrison, New Market Heights, Deep Bottom and Parker’s Battery.

Visitor Centers are located at:

Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works - The park's main visitor center occupies one of the surviving buildings that made up the Tredegar Iron Works – the Confederacy's leader in the production of artillery, ammunition, and war-related materials.  Located at 470 Tredegar Street, Richmond, 804-771-2145.

Chimborazo Medical Museum - Chimborazo became one of the Civil War's largest military hospitals. When completed it contained more than 100 wards, a bakery, and even a brewery. Although the hospital no longer exists, a museum on the same grounds contains original medical instruments and personal artifacts. Located at 3215 East Broad Street, Richmond, 804-226-1981.

Cold Harbor Battlefield and Visitor Center - Cold Harbor is the best-known battlefield in the park. For two weeks, May 31 through June 12, 1864, the armies of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant tangled in a complicated series of actions.  The visitor center includes an electric map program for Cold Harbor and Gaines' Mill, exhibits, and a small bookstore.  Located at 5515 Anderson-Wright Drive, five miles southeast of Mechanicsville on route 156, 804-226-1981.

Glendale Battlefield and Visitor Center - The park visitor center is located within the walls of the national cemetery and is open seasonally. It has an electric map program, a small room of exhibits, and restrooms. Visitors touring the last two battlefields of the Seven Days (Glendale/Frayser's Farm and Malvern Hill) are encouraged to stop for orientation at the visitor center. The adjacent cemetery holds nearly 1200 graves, many of them Union soldiers who died in the battles of June 30 and July 1, 1862. Located at 8301 Willis Church Road, inside the Glendale National Cemetery, 804-226-1981
