Who We Are

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is an official museum of the United States Navy.  The museum is dedicated to the study of 237 years of naval history in the Hampton Roads region.  Its primary purpose is to educate military personnel and the public about naval history in the Hampton Roads area.

Introduces guests to over two hundred years of activity in and around the great harbor of Hampton Roads, Virginia. Visitors will encounter the common sailor from the final days of the Revolutionary War to life aboard a floating city, today's great aircraft carrier. Groups welcome.

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum was established in 1979 by the Secretary of the Navy as an official naval museum to document, interpret, and exhibit the naval history of the Hampton Roads region. Exhibits provide an educational overview of significant local naval actions and the evolution of naval ship construction from the American Revolution to the present time. On display are underwater artifacts, periophotographs, an outstanding collection of naval artwork, electronic maps, and an extensive collection of scaled ship models and ship memorabilia. The museum is located on the second floor of Nauticus, on the downtown Norfolk waterfront. The museum is free. There is a fee to visit the rest of Nauticus. Access to the museum is through the guest relations door.
