Who We Are
The Division of Licensing Programs which regulates assisted living facilities and adult day care facilities operates from a central office in Richmond and eight service locations statewide.
Assisted Living residences are facilities that provide care and protection in a residential setting to four or more adults, in one or more locations, who are aged, infirm or disabled. The State Board of Social Services promulgates regulations for assisted living facilities.
Each resident of an assisted living residence has an individualized service plan based on assessed needs. A facility must provide for care, services, and activities that meet the needs, interests and abilities of each resident. Every resident has rights and responsibilities as specified in the Code of Virginia and the standards.
Adult day care centers are also licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services. Adult day care centers are regulated, non-residential facilities that provide a variety of health, social and related support services in a protective setting during part of the day to four or more aged, infirm or disabled adults.
